GOLD Coast has been left counting more costly blows after its 33-point loss to the Brisbane Lions on Saturday night with Sam Day suffering a groin injury and Daniel Gorringe under an injury cloud with a shoulder issue.
The good news for the Suns is that skipper Gary Ablett, who was a late withdrawal with a calf injury, will be back next week against Richmond; a game that they may well fancy themselves in.
“You don’t plan on injuries, but eventually they take their toll,” Suns coach Guy McKenna said.
“We’re just don’t have polish going forward, that could be personnel. If you looked at our side with Dixon and Smith and (Brandon) Matera and these guys in, it could be different.
“The good thing was the boys fought the fight and we came up short.”
“We’re obviously depleted in our tall stocks. With adversity comes great challenge, great hope, and that’s what we look forward to,” McKenna said.
“Clearly we’d be better off if some of these blokes hadn’t broken legs and snapped ACLs.
“I don’t think the boys are putting the cue in the rack. They’re moving forward to establish themselves in the AFL.”
Lions coach Michael V0ss said he was proud of his team after the gruelling win. It was a highly physical contest against the Suns; a rivalry in Queensland that appears to be hotting up.
“We got the momentum towards the end and a couple of big finishes. You’ve got to be tough, you’ve got to be able to run when you
need to run and I thought they did that today and finished out quite strong,” Voss said.
Pearce Hanley and Matthew Leuenberger were brilliant for the Lions.
